In a conversation with the owner we discover the story behind this model, the unique interchangeable options and the collaboration with the film Amsterdamned 2.
The R.O.3 was developed in response to demand for a watch that can be worn every day, including during intensive activities. "Alongside the classic models we wanted to make a watch that is truly sporty," the owner explains. "A model that can absorb forces, so you can wear it constantly without worry."
Extra protection
To achieve this, the existing shock system has been further expanded. The owner aptly compares its function to a crumple zone. This system absorbs impact and has been widened for the R.O.3 so it can withstand even greater forces. In addition the watch is fitted with a tachymeter to measure speeds. The result is a robust watch that retains its elegance.
A watch with many faces
What truly sets the R.O.3 apart is the far-reaching scope for personalisation. Where many brands stop at swapping a strap, R.O. Watches goes a step further.
"The customer can wear a restrained watch today and choose something colourful tomorrow," the owner explains. The watch is designed so that not only the straps, but also the dials and pushers can be swapped. Owners can 'save' extra dials in the accompanying box. R.O. Watches offers a special service here: customers can have their dial changed free of charge once a year. That way the watch grows with the wearer's taste.
Amsterdamned 2: a Dutch icon
The robustness of the R.O.3 did not go unnoticed in the film world. At an early stage of development R.O. Watches was approached for a collaboration with the long-awaited film Amsterdamned 2.
The requirements for the watch of lead actor Huub Stapel were demanding. "There is a lot of action, speedboats and water. The watch had to be perfectly waterproof and withstand enormous G-forces," according to the owner. Especially for this a high-quality caoutchouc strap was developed with an extra secure clasp.
Huub Stapel, who despite his age of 70 performs his own stunts, was closely involved in the process. He specifically chose the green finish that suits the character of his role.
Pride of Dutch craftsmanship
For the owner, the visit to the film set was a special moment, all the more so because his daughter appeared as an extra. Seeing the R.O.3 in action, worn by an icon like Stapel, confirms the quality of this Dutch product.
"It is a beautiful symbiosis," he concludes. "A high-quality watch in a high-quality Dutch film." That Huub Stapel continues to wear the watch privately after filming may well be the greatest compliment a watchmaker can receive. The R.O.3 is more than a prop; it is lasting proof of Dutch mastery.
